Text: 2 Chronicles 20:21–22

INTRODUCTION

June signifies the midpoint of the year. This time of the year is all about taking stock, expressing gratitude, and reflecting. Many of us can attest that the journey from January to this point has not been without difficulties. Despite the many highlights, there have also been times of doubt, disappointment, financial stress, health challenges, family strife, and spiritual warfare.

This year has been a lot like the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. They were filled with hope, joy, and excitement as they departed from Egypt after God delivered them. However, they encountered their first major challenge shortly after setting out, the Red Sea. When they cried out to God, He enabled them to overcome their fear and cross the sea on dry ground (Exodus 14:21–22).

As they continued their journey, they encountered many obstacles. Many nations and powerful kings tried to stop them from reaching their destination. Giants stood before them as terrifying obstacles. Yet God granted them victory after victory. Because God made a way where there seemed to be no way, not even the raging Jordan River could hinder them (Joshua 3:14–17).

The heavily fortified city of Jericho remained their final great challenge. Humanly speaking, its walls seemed impregnable. But God instructed them to march around the city while praising and worshipping Him. As they obeyed and lifted their voices in praise, the walls came crashing down (Joshua 6:20).

Likewise, many of us began this year with lofty goals. We entered January believing that God would accomplish His plans and fulfill our desires. But as the months passed, various challenges emerged. Through it all, however, God has remained faithful. By His sustaining grace, not by our own strength, wisdom, or abilities, we have made it to June.

As we approach the midpoint of the year, God is calling us to live lives of gratitude. Saying "thank You" is only the beginning of gratitude. It is a powerful expression of faith that acknowledges God's goodness and sovereignty. Gratitude and praise can release divine intervention and fuel victory, as demonstrated by King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah in 2 Chronicles 20:21–22, as well as by Paul and Silas in prison.

1. GRATITUDE ACKNOWLEDGES GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

"Give thanks to the Lord, for His love endures forever." (2 Chronicles 20:21)

A dreadful situation confronted Jehoshaphat. A coalition of hostile armies came against Judah. From a human perspective, defeat seemed inevitable. However, Jehoshaphat shifted his focus from the size of the enemy to the greatness of God.

As they led the army in song, the singers exalted God's holiness and declared His everlasting love. They thanked Him for His faithfulness in the past and for His promise to intervene in the present. When circumstances become difficult, practicing gratitude reminds Christians of God's goodness.

Instead of focusing on our problems, we can focus on God's promises, turning our worries into trust and our obstacles into opportunities for God to display His power. As the psalmist declared, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits" (Psalm 103:2).

Our faith is strengthened as we remember God's faithfulness. The God who helped us yesterday will help us today and tomorrow, and we demonstrate that confidence through gratitude.

2. GRATITUDE RELEASES DIVINE INTERVENTION

"As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men..." (2 Chronicles 20:22)

God intervened at a specific moment. The Bible says, "As they began to sing and praise..." Their praise triggered divine intervention. Praise is not merely a response to victory; it is often the pathway to victory. Thanksgiving prepares the way for God to demonstrate His mighty power.

Paul and Silas provide another remarkable example. After being unjustly beaten and imprisoned, they refused to complain. Instead, at midnight, they prayed and sang praises to God (Acts 16:25–26). Suddenly, an earthquake shook the prison, the doors flew open, and everyone's chains were broken.

Many Christians wait until circumstances improve before giving thanks. However, biblical thanksgiving glorifies God before the breakthrough comes because faith believes that God is already at work. Rick Warren says, "Being grateful shows belief in God's goodness no matter what." Expressing gratitude demonstrates trust in God's sovereignty, even when life does not make sense.

3. GRATITUDE POSITIONS US FOR GREATER VICTORIES

Our past victories should inspire gratitude, and gratitude, in turn, prepares us for even greater victories ahead.

Even after crossing the Red Sea, God continued to lead the Israelites. More victories awaited them after they crossed the Jordan River. More territories were conquered after the fall of Jericho.

Likewise, our testimonies will not end with the victories God has given us from January through June. They are evidence that He is preparing us for greater demonstrations of His glory in the months ahead.

Gratitude keeps our hope alive. It acknowledges that God's work in our lives is not yet complete. A grateful heart positions us to experience greater blessings, greater opportunities, greater favour from God, greater spiritual growth, and greater breakthroughs.

The Nigerian Baptist Convention Daily Devotional repeatedly emphasizes that gratitude is a mark of spiritual maturity and an essential discipline for believers who desire continual victory and fellowship with God.

Paul exhorts believers: "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Thankfulness prepares us for future victories and keeps our hearts aligned with God's purposes.

CONCLUSION

June reminds us of God's sustaining grace as we reach the midpoint of the year. Like the Israelites on their journey from Egypt to Canaan, we have encountered Red Seas, wilderness experiences, hostile forces, Jordans, and Jerichos. Yet God has remained faithful through it all.

As Jehoshaphat discovered, gratitude fuels victory. As Paul and Silas experienced, praise opens prison doors. As the Israelites witnessed, worship can bring down walls.

The God who delivered them is still at work today. Therefore, let us not dwell on our difficulties. Instead, let us glorify God for all His benefits, reflect on His faithfulness, and offer Him our heartfelt gratitude. As we enter the second half of this year, may our lives be marked by gratitude, praise, and testimonies of victory.
